One of the big things about being a Hunter in WoW is getting to tame an animal and have it be your companion, dishing out damage and being your own personal meat shield. Even better, you get to name the critter once it’s succumbed to your charms. This has lead to some truly stellar names in the annals of pet naming history, along with some, erm, questionable choices.
The tale of my taming Mirya the Teal Kitty (yes, Matticus, she’s teal, not blue), as well as the reasoning behind her name, is well documented. But then there’s the other pets I’ve had. There was the black kitty with the white spots very early on in my hunter career that was named Sylvie after my then real-life kitty. I tamed a white windserpent once and named it Pip, after a character’s pet from a book series by Alan Dean Foster (excellent series). Then there was a leopard-spotted kitty I tamed that I named Kibble. Why? It amused me and still does. When I got my warpstalker, I named him Kieru. One of the definitions I found for it is “Vanish”, which of course is perfect for a warpstalker.
But then there’s the other pets out there. There’s the turtles named “Soup”, the “ugly” pets named “Pookie” or “Muffin”, or the odd gorilla named “Dkong”. Some of the best fun I had in beta testing TBC was when my class leader named her new pet after her hubby and I named my new warpstalker after The Boyfriend. Both gentlemen felt less than honored, while everyone else in the guild got a giggle or three watching “GuildLeader” die over and over while we were learning the new instances. I know I saw an owl wander by the other day named “Splat”. At one point I’ve seen a bat named “Booya”. There was a pink tallstrider named “Shrimp” that I used to see a lot, but not so much anymore. And then there was the one person that named their pet a very mundane name: “James.” I got curious and asked why they named them that. Their response? “It’s my soon-to-be-ex-boss. i like watching him get slapped around then stomped on. It prevents me from yelling at work before I put in my two week notice on Monday. ^^” There ya go, pet destruction as an anger management tool!
Anyone else seen any oddball pet names or just have a name you use over and over cos it tickles you?

Hunter alt… cat named Sparky… at least Vorienn has a Sparky Cat since my real Sparky Cat died a week ago… ::sigh::
I’m a big of fan pet names that work in conjunction with the hunter’s name. best one I remember seeing was a tauren hunter named “Quarterpounder” with a pet named “Cheese”. poor James, though… I’m guessing he doesn’t get a lot of mend pet lovin’ must be a MM hunter
Let’s see.. pre-BC, one of my guildmates had a boar he named Deeznutsforu. He was weird. My absolute favorite is an ex-guildie. On one of our ZG runs he tamed a bat, which he promptly named AdamWest. After BC, he left the guild, and went on to join one that’s got pretty good progression on our server. I saw him one day after I had dinged 70. With a ravager named AdamEast. I about split my gut laughing.
The other day in SW I saw a hunter named Pixxy with a pet named Dust, thought that was cute
Also I’m going to be contrary and mention two of my biggest peeves with pet names. One is hunters who don’t name their pets at all. Ever. Come on people, this is your partner in crime here, give them a little bit of dignity besides “Wolf” or “Cat”, huh? And the other is hunters who give their pet the same name it had before it was tamed, or a version thereof. “Yes, you’re not lv 58-60 yet, I KNOW you’ve got King Bangalash there and not a Winterspring kitty. You didn’t have to name it KingB or Bangy or Bangalash.”
Hm, on our server, I’ve seen a boar named Baconbitz and a croc named Luggage. Both of those made me laugh! The funniest thing ever, though? A 70 hunter friend of mine went and tamed a 19th level ghost cat from Darkshore, then brought it into Old Durnholde with us. This was before the last patch when pet levelling got easier, and that cat was level 31 when we finished that instance!
In my old guild, there’s a hunter who’s pet bear is named Foofy. Just a regular old bear. But everyone likes Foofy more than the hunter…
My pet is a ghost saber named Smoke…unoriginal and boring, I know…but the other pet is the new unique raptor from Dustwallow…his name is Abstraction.
Yes. The cat is teal. That’s the whole reason I tamed him; so he could match my hair =D
I typically try to give my pets names that have a subtle meaning or joke behind them that few people are going to catch but which are (hopefully) witty when they are caught. For this reason, it sometimes takes me forever to think up names for pets, because they have to be perfect…
In a Warsong Gulch battle ground, I saw a Night Elf Hunter with an ugly plaguelands pig named MyExWife. I had a good laugh at that one.
you know… If I hated my ex-wife that would be even funnier! And it’s pretty funny already!
i named my carrion bird from mulgore “Cthulhu” i thought the tail looked like tentacles. my current pet is a ravager named “ithaqua” both are names from H.P. Lovecraft’s great old ones, some people get the references others don’t. Also had a boar named scruffy on my first character ever, the name came outta nowhere and just stuck i guess.
My alt hunters boar from rfk is simply named Pig and I have a ravager named Quasimodo.
I named my cat Maceo, after the Jane’s Addiction song.
A friend of mine in Sing just picked up a new ravager pet in hopes that it’d help pick up his DPS some, and on a recent boss encounter, I noticed “OHSHlTSON” being targeted.
On Medivh
My 70 Hunter has had a crocolisk since Level 12, Dundee
My 62 NElf hunter Xploeradora, has her White Gorilla named Boots
I was grouped with a Dwarf Hunter some time ago who had a cool add-on that whenever he ordered the pet to attack, or fed him he would say something like “Go Dave! Kill for daddy!” etc etc
Yes his Bear’s name was Dave!
I love that!!
Oh and our hunter CL has a scorpid called Huntard!
I have a cat that I’ve had with me since Darkshore called “Kuscheltier,” which means “stuffed animal” or “plush toy” in German.
