James Dondero commenced his career as an analyst in the year 1984 as soon as he got accepted at the Morgan Guaranty training program. He graduated from the University of Virginia’s McIntire School of Commerce in the same year.
Mr. James is the Chairman of NexPoint, the board of NexBank, CSS Medical as well as Cornerstone Healthcare. Also, Dondero is on the board of MGM Studios and American Banknote.
Popularly known to friends and family as Jim, James Dondero supports an array of charitable activities such as Perot Museum of Natural Science, George W. Bush Presidential Library, and Institute, Uplift Education, Snowball Express, Education is freedom and SMU’s Tower Scholars Program.
He obtained dual majors in Accounting as well as Finance with the highest honors (Beta Alpha Psi, Beta Gamma Sigma). The present president as well as the co-founder of Highland Capital Management, James Dondero has more than 30 years of experience working in the equity and credit markets. During his tenure, The Highland Capital Management produced an array of solutions and products for retail and institutional investors that received several accolades around the country.

In the year 1985, James Dondero joined the American Express as a Corporate Bond Analysis. He then became a Portfolio Manager for nearly $1 billion in fixed income funds. In 1989, he left American Express.
James Dondero was the Chief Investment Officer of the Protective Life’s GIV subsidiary before he founded Highland Capital. The branch that started in 1989 grew to $2 billion under James’ outstanding leadership.
